Bolond Istók
feature film | 98 min
The story unfolds when a 19-year-old Arany, restless and full of youthful ambition, decides to join a traveling theater troupe, leaving behind the familiar confines of his rural upbringing. However, his six-month stint as an actor proves to be a tumultuous and disillusioning experience, a “dead-end road” that he later reflects on with irony and self-deprecating humor in his unfinished poetic work, Bolond Istók.
The film paints a vivid picture of this formative yet difficult phase in Arany’s life, capturing his struggles to find his place, the allure of the stage, and the harsh realities of a life in theater. Through the lens of his youthful missteps and eventual realization of his true calling, we see how this chapter not only informed his worldview but also played a pivotal role in his artistic evolution, molding him into the poet whose works would define Hungarian literature.
